Extraordinary socio-political and economic developments are spawning new rules, incentives and opportunities for development in Africa.Yet, the adoption of the traditional model of business education in Africa means that we are unable to tackle an important contradiction in the African condition – abundant resources and opportunities and yet high levels of unemployment and poverty of many university graduates.More than ever, Africa needs executives with advanced cognitive leadership skills to discover the limitations of current management practices, develop deep insights into what works and what does not work, and to conduct rigorous discovery for new knowledge and next practices suitable for the African context. The new dynamics of Africa require business graduates and leaders who regard understanding and appreciation of the African context as the foundation of unbiased analysis, nuanced evaluation of organizational practices, and creative originality. In short, we need business leaders who remain committed to the rewards of free inquiry and experimentation.
NIBS mission is to get our students and executive participants qualify for the real world of business and management in Africa, and beyond. We achieve this mission through a fundamentally new educational model – Discovery-rich Performance Learning (DPL) – with emphasis on discovery of new insights and practices through work-integrated, project-based learning. This model breaks traditional business education assumptions, rules and practices to introduce several innovations including employ ability pillars in each program; the use of teaching companies; team teaching by academics and executives/entrepreneurs; student team learning and assessment;360 degree performance assessment;use of company performance seal; student activity and action portfolio, and live pillars in program design.
Our educational model is of vital importance, not only to our students and participants, but to the organizations and public who want them to qualify for the real world.NIBS require students and participants to focus on compelling organizational challenges and seek answers to insightful questions. We encourage them to create new knowledge, practices, and new business ventures by looking at the bigger picture, testing ideas in the field to discover new insights, probing the importance of the new discovery and analysing the impact of implementation.In the end, our students and participants develop habits of the mind – at once flexible and insightful, informed by experience, yet oriented towards innovation.

It is an honor to serve as President and Executive Dean of NIBS. My goal is to work with colleagues, students, friends, institutional partners and affiliates to promote NIBS as a distinctive, original and different African institution – an institution where students and participants anticipate rather than just react to solve ever-shifting problems; act as agents of a culture of innovation in organizational practices and business start-ups rather than merely be witnesses of the endeavors of others.
