Globalization, technological development and reduced free trade barriers mean increased mobility for companies. However it is far from being the case that all companies make the strategic decisions to compete in the international market place. In particular it is more often the case that small and medium-sized companies remain focused on the domestic market instead.
What factors play major roles in the actions of the company are described in Svante Andersson’s doctoral thesis entitled ‘Internationalization as an act of Entrepreneurship’. The thesis is based on extensive field studies of three Swedish sub-contractors- the rubber companies Trelleborg, Sunnex and Skega and puts forwards the theory that there are different types of entrepreneurs working with different strategies regarding each company’s internationalization process. The results show that the strategic choices in the internationalization process often concern an entrepreneur’s personal characteristics than outside factors. Other factors can be ascribed to whether the decision-maker perceives threats or opportunities in the development of operations in an international direction. The entrepreneur’s background and interests are also significant for whether technology development and new products are prioritized instead of establishing operations in other countries.
