NiBS, while still quite young, has already established a stellar international reputation as a world-class university, with demonstrated excellence in a number of essential doctoral disciplines. Our faculty, with diverse backgrounds in Marketing, Finance, Innovation, Management, Leadership, Human Resource Management (HRM), Organizational Behavior, Economics, Entrepreneurship among others are recognized as outstanding scholars in their respective disciplines as well as accomplished mentors in terms of producing the next generation of scholars in business.

This unique and timely program is possible because we do not have the traditional mindset of playing ‘god’ with thesis supervision – a common ‘migraine’ and ‘nightmare’ for doctoral students. One key aspect of a PhD is developing a lifelong bond between supervisor and student. At NiBS, students work hand-in-hand with their supervisors to produce world-class research. A bond that we cherish and nurture at all times.

NiBS also offers candidates the tools and knowledge required to make vital contributions to the field. As a PhD student at NiBS, your research will advance knowledge in your chosen field. In fact, that is what a PhD is all about. Learning how to contribute knowledge to an existing body of research. In the PhD program at NiBS, we rigorously train and equip students with strong analytical and research skills in formal social inquiry, to address complex issues in-depth, and to disseminate knowledge in scholarly journals and other publication outlets to contribute to the theoretical and empirical knowledge and practice of the field.

To prepare candidates for research and teaching careers in higher education and for careers requiring advanced research and analytical capabilities in research departments in consulting, banking, government, etc.


  • Acquire knowledge and expertise required to identify, understand and successfully tackle a key research issue in a specialized area of study in business and management.

  • Exhibit rigorous analytical and research skills in formal social inquiry required to define and address a complex issue in-depth, and to disseminate knowledge in scholarly journals and other publication outlets to contribute to the theoretical and empirical literature as well as influence the theory and practice of management and public policy in Africa.

  • Demonstrate expertise in a specific topic area through the design, execution, and completion of a doctoral thesis that contributes to new theoretical and empirical knowledge and practice of the field.

  • Demonstrate the ability to disseminate new knowledge through publications in academic and practitioner journals and other outlets by achieving a successful internationally peer-reviewed journal publication before graduation.

  • Develop and demonstrate key skills in the design and delivery of educational courses through an understanding of the theory and practice of teaching in  the field of specification

  • A 3-4 year program with modular delivery

  • We have experienced research-oriented faculty, actively engaged in academic and applied research in business administration.

  • Demonstrate expertise in a specific topic area through the design, execution, and completion of a doctoral thesis that contributes to new theoretical and empirical knowledge and practice of the field.

  • We run a cohort model designed to promote collegiality, interdependence, networking and camaraderie among participants to enhance personal, academic and professional growth.

  • We have a creative 3-step dissertation supervision model, led by experienced, local and international research-oriented faculty, designed to ensure successful on-time completion.

  • We have teaching seminars that develop your skills in discovery–rich performance learning pedagogy.

  • You attend academic publishing modules designed to develop your skills in writing academic publications; led by experienced scholars who have published in leading academic journals.

  • You are encouraged and supported to publish at least one paper in international peer-review journals approved by NiBS.

  • We have merit-based scholarships available for applicants, especially women.

  • We offer flexible customized payment plan to suit each applicant.

The program is delivered in a modular format with each course completed over a number of days. In between the on-campus residencies, students will remain engaged through interactive experiences as well as team learning activities to complete assignments and to prepare for the next on-campus residency.

Components of the programn

Core Courses – 18 Credits

The core 6 courses (3-credits each) emphasize the development of skills in understanding theories and practices of business administration foundation courses. The core courses are

  • MGT 801: Managing Organizations (3 credits)

  • MGT 802: Business Economics (3 credits)

  • MGT 803: Accounting for Decision making (3 credits)

  • MGT 804: Marketing Management (3 credits)

  • MGT 805: Managing Operations (3 credits)

  • MGT 806: Managerial Finance (3 credits)

Research Methodology – 15 credits

Five research methodology courses (3 credits each) develop research skills needed to conduct business research and complete a doctoral thesis. In these courses, students learn to evaluate a broad range of business and academic research, to design research projects and use research techniques, and to analyze data using a variety of statistical techniques

  • MGT 900: Scientific Inquiry and Theory Development – 3 credits

  • MGT 901: Qualitative Research I – 3 credits

  • MGT 902: Qualitative Research II – 3 credits

  • MGT 903: Quantitative Research – 3 credits

  • MGT 904: Advanced Quantitative Research – 3 credits

Area of Specialization – 12 credits

To enable students appreciate fundamental concepts and issues in their field of study – as directed by their chosen research areas, courses in the following areas (concentration areas) must be taken as the case may be: Finance, Management, Innovation, Leadership and Marketing. These courses cultivate the breadth of knowledge and understanding of the theory development and comprehension of current conceptual issues in their chosen field of research.

  • MGT 817: Consumer Behaviour Theory and Research (3 credits)

  • MGT 818: Special Topics in Marketing (6 credits)

Strategy & Innovation; or

  • MGT 819: Strategic Innovation Theory – 3 credits

  • MGT 820: New Product Development – 3 credits

  • MGT 821: Special Topics in Innovation – 6 credits

Organizational Leadership; or

  • MGT 822: Leadership Theory and Practice (3 credits)

  • MGT 823: Leadership Issues in Emerging Markets (3 credits)

  • MGT 824: Special Topics in Leadership – 6 credits

Teaching and Publishing Seminars – 6 credits

Teaching and publishing seminars provide the student with opportunities to understand and practice teaching skills as well as to conduct and publish original research under the supervision of an advisor.

  • MGT 905: Teaching Seminar - 3 credits

  • MGT 906: Publishing Seminar - 3 credits

Thesis Project -24 credits

Thesis develops the student’s skill in designing, conducting, and evaluating business research. Candidates complete this project under the guidance of their thesis supervisor. Candidates also present their output to receive feedback from peers and invited academics.
