Our Story

From Vision to Chartered University

NiBS University was founded in July 2014 by Professor Kwaku Atuahene-Gima, after more than 25 years of academic and industry experience across leading global institutions including the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Wollongong, the City University of Hong Kong and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).

Through extensive engagement across Africa and Asia, he concluded that traditional educational models were unsuited to working professionals in Africa. The insight was clear:
If practice-oriented doctoral education was necessary for knowledge-based economies in Europe and Asia, it was even more critical for Africa.

NiBS was therefore designed as:
  • Executive-friendly
  • Research-intensive
  • Context-driven
  • Structured for timely completion
  • Focused on knowledge creation, not only knowledge consumption

From its inception, NiBS prioritized legitimacy and quality. It received institutional authorization from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (formerly the National Accreditation Board) on July 1, 2014, and full institutional and program accreditation on April 15, 2015.

In December 2024, NiBS achieved chartered university status — a defining institutional milestone granting full academic autonomy. Today, NiBS University stands as a practice-oriented research business university dedicated to developing leaders who think critically, act ethically, and contribute meaningfully to Africa’s transformation.
